Satori/R4S Routing & Connectivity Explained

This article explains how to use the Satori Control Panel and what are the routing/connectivity possibilities of the Satori Monitoring controller.

The following picture shows all functionality buttons on the front panel of Satori Monitoring Controller.

We will use it as a guidance to the control panel options and configurations.

1. Power button

Toggles Standby/On state.

2. Input select buttons channels 1-8

Input select lets you switch between your desired input source, which will be fed to your

selected monitor output.

3. Sum select button

The sum select button lets you send your stereo sum to your chosen monitor output.

4. Rotary control

Large stepped relay attenuator for headphone volume and main monitor outputs.

● Press the volume attenuator to choose which output you are controlling.

● Press and hold to mute the currently selected output. i.e. Monitor outputs or

headphone outputs as indicated by the LEDs.

5. Mono, Dim & M/S

● Press the mono button to sum the currently chosen monitor output to mono. This

button corresponds to the last setting chosen in the Mono effects dropdown menu

in the Control Panel application.

● Press the Dim button to activate the -20dB attenuator. Press once more to restore

normal volume.

● When Mono is active, you also have the option to select M/S. Press the M/S button

to select either the sum or the difference between the L/R channels. This lets you

monitor only the center or only the periphery of your audio.

6. Talkback button

Press the Talkback button to activate the talkback microphone. Talkback can be

distributed to your chosen headphone output(s) from the Control Panel application.

7. Monitor select buttons 1-4

Press to choose between the four monitor outputs. The chosen source will be fed to the

selected monitor out.

8. Headphone outputs

Two independently assignable headphone outputs (HP1 & HP2), selectable and controllable

from the main volume control knob

The picture shows the interface of the control panel of Satori Monitoring Controller.

1. The INPUT section is where you can select between your desired input source, which will be fed to your selected monitor output, same as on the front panel.

2. The sum select button lets you send your stereo sum to your chosen monitor output. Keep in mind that the 4 x Stereo Source Inputs on D-Sub with a Thru Output D-Sub Thru, outputs all 4 stereo channels coming through Stereo input channels 5-8. The D-Sub inputs, as well as going to the D-Sub Thru, also get summed to the stereo sum output. The D-Sub Inputs are on an 8 channel D-Sub connection. The 8 channels make up 4 stereo inputs, odd numbered inputs being the left signal and even numbered inputs being the right signal.

3. The TRIM button on the right lets you trim each individual input to your desired level.

4. Whereas the FX button below allows you to apply different FX to inputs such as Invert L/R , Invert L only, Invert R only, Flip and Flip Invert L/R. The normal option is the one you would need to have selected if you don't want any of these FX applied.

5. The rotary knob controls the volume of the selected Monitor Output.

6. Whereas the Trim on the right hand side of the volume knob controls the trim level of the selected Monitor Output.

7. Under the Monitor section you can press to choose between the four monitor outputs. The chosen source will be fed to the selected monitor out.

8. On the TB select menu , you can select the preferred talkback microphone which could be the internal one or one connected to the satori input. With the talk button you enable the talkback so the musicians can hear you and with the TB VOLUME menu you can control the gain of the talkback microphone.

9. On the right hand side you can control which INPUT channels to be fed to your Headphone OUTs and also using the MUTE button to mute the headphones and using the MIC button to send the talkback signal to your HP OUTs.  In order to listen to what is outputted to the MONITOR OUT you need to select MON here on all HP channels.

10. On the bottom of the control panel you have 5 PRESET buttons. You can save different settings of the control panel by holding COMMAND/CONTROL and left-clicking on the PRESET 1-5. Then you just need to click on the PRESET button 1-5 to load the desired preset.

11. On the left hand side of the panel you can control the volume of the SUMMING MIX.

12. Under the Volume knob you have the MONO, DIM, MUTE and HPF button. The MONO makes the output of the monitor MONO for reference, the DIM lowers to monitor out to a very low level, the MUTE just mutes the monitor out and the HPF applies a 110Hz high-pass filter that is usually used when you have a subwoofer connected to achieve LFE effect.

Next we will show you how you can use R4S controller which essentially mimics the functionality of the front panel of Satori Monitoring controller:

1. SUM Select button. Press to send the stereo sum to the chosen monitor output.

2. Input Select buttons, channels 1 - 8. Switch your desired input source, which will be fed to your chosen monitor output.

3. Talkback button. Activates the talkback microphone. Talkback can be distributed to your chosen headphone output(s) from the Control Panel application.

4. Monitor Select buttons 1 - 4. Switch between the four monitor outputs. The chosen source will be fed to the selected monitor out.

5. Rotary control. Large stepped relay attenuator for the main monitor output.

● Turn clockwise or counterclockwise to adjust level.

● Press-and-hold to mute.

● To access the Trim Offset feature, press and hold the desired 'Monitor' (1, 2, 3, 4) or 'Input' (Ch. 1 - 8) button. Turn the rotary control to adjust trim (-6dB to +6dB) or double-press to return to 0dB.

6. Mono Dim, M/S & Sub

● Press the Mono button to sum the currently chosen monitor output to mono.

● Press the Dim button to activate the -20dB attenuator. Press once more to restore normal volume.

● When Mono is active, you also have the option to choose M/S. Press the M/S button to choose either the sum or the difference between the L/R channels. This lets you monitor either the center or the periphery of your audio.

● Press the Sub button to activate the LFE (low frequency effect) output

The photo below explains the REAR panel of SATORI Monitoring controller, which shows all possible I/O connectivity options.

1. Mains Power Connection. The AEC connector supports a range from ~95-245 V. This lets the device automatically accommodate mains voltage in every country.

2. USB Full-Speed. Satori uses an USB connector Type-B and lets users connect to the Windows & macOS. Control Panel application.

3. 4 x Stereo Source Inputs. Four stereo inputs, one on XLR and three on TRS for connecting a wide variety of inputs.

4. 4 x Stereo Source Inputs on D-Sub with a Thru Output. D-Sub Thru, outputs all 4 stereo channels coming through Stereo input channels 5-8. The D-Sub inputs, as well as going to the D-Sub Thru, also get summed to the stereo sum output. The D-Sub Inputs are on an 8 channel D-Sub connection. The 8 channels make up

4 stereo inputs, odd numbered inputs being the left signal and even numbered inputs being the right signal.

5. 4 x Main Stereo Monitor Outputs. Four assignable balanced stereo outputs, one over XLR, three over TRS

6. Stereo Sum Output. The stereo sum output takes the summing input channels 5-8 and creates a stereo signal output over TRS.

7. Talkback Mic Input. The talkback input lets you connect a dynamic mic for another talkback option, using your preferred microphone.

8. Balanced LFE Outputs. LFE stands for Low Frequency Effect. Balanced TRS to connect a sub-woofer, which outputs the currently selected monitor signal.

9. Headphone Outputs. Two further independently assignable headphone outputs (HP3 & HP4), selectable and controllable from the main volume attenuator and the Control Panel application.
